Saint Lucia Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the Saint Lucia-Cuba Friendship Association and 46 Years of Bilateral Diplomatic Relations

Castries, August 23, 2025 – With the presence of the Minister of Public Service, Interior, Labor, and Gender Affairs, Virginia Albert Poyotte, the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two nations was commemorated in Saint Lucia.

The ambassadors of Saint Lucia to Mexico, Venezuela, ALBA-TCP, and CELAC, Dr. Peter Lansiquot, and of Mexico to Saint Lucia, Luis Manuel López Moreno, participated in the ceremony. Diplomats from Venezuela, Brazil, and the People's Republic of China were also present.

It was an occasion on which friends; Graduates in Cuba, Cuban residents, and collaborators discussed the solidarity of our Saint Lucian brothers and sisters with the people of the Greater Antilles, besieged for more than 60 years by a criminal blockade and significantly affected by Cuba's unjust inclusion on the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism.

Minister Poyotte recalled the experiences of the first group of Saint Lucians who traveled to Cuba for the 11th World Festival of Youth and Students, of which she was a member.

Marlene Alexander, president of the Saint Lucia-Cuba Friendship Association, spoke about the organization's historic work. Ambassador Lansiquot, a Cuban graduate, expressed his gratitude for Cuba's solidarity with Saint Lucia and mentioned the political challenges facing our countries.

Cuban Ambassador Yenielys Vilma Regueiferos Linares celebrated the occasion by highlighting 20 reasons for celebrating this 20th anniversary.

Recognition was given to the former President of the Association, Rawle Harvey; the head of the Cuban Medical Brigade, Dr. Arvelio Ballester Pérez; and the entire Cuban Medical Brigade.

The Saint Lucia Ballet School and National Folkloric Ensemble, along with a Rueda de Casino performance by Cuban collaborators, added a cultural touch to the event, which, due to its sensitivity, will be remembered with great love and commitment by its participants.
