Vienna, June 21, 2026 – The Austria-Cuba Friendship Association (ÖKG) held another day of solidarity with Cuba and against the blockade on the iconic Mariahilferstraße, one of the busiest thoroughfares in the Austrian capital. Activists from the Association took to the streets to inform passersby about the critical situation facing the island, at a time marked by the intensification of the U.S. embargo and the recent executive orders issued on January 29 and May 1, 2026.
The response from the Viennese was immediate: numerous people approached the booth to learn about the reality in Cuba, express their solidarity with the country, and inquire about the Association’s work and how to collaborate with them. As part of this initiative, German-language copies of the Declarations of the Revolutionary Government of Cuba were also distributed.
The ÖKG maintains a busy schedule of street activities and cultural events that have succeeded in building a strong solidarity movement in the Austrian capital, with growing citizen participation.
Founded in 1969, the ÖKG is one of the oldest Cuba-friendly organizations in Europe, which has maintained an uninterrupted record of support for the Cuban Revolution, with a presence in several federal states. Throughout 2026, it has intensified its advocacy efforts, donations, and coordination with other political forces and social movements, including joint actions with the Slovenia-Cuba Friendship Association.
