New Delhi, December 21, 2021. The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Alejandro Simancas Marin, presented the medal "Of Friendship" to the dear friend of Cuba Sonya Surabhi Gupta for her career and attachment to the defense of the Cuban Revolution.
The decoration of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, signed by President Miguel Diaz-Canel, was awarded to Sonya Gupta at the proposal of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples.
Upon receiving the medal, the professor of Latin American Studies at Jamia Millia Islamia University highlighted the strength and resistance of the Cuban people in the face of the economic, commercial and financial blockade and the aggressions of the U.S. government against Cuba.
I receive this medal as a recognition of the strength of the solidarity movement with Cuba in India," Gupta told Prensa Latina.
Sonya referred to the Cuban Five Heroes as the unbreakable spirit and the will for human dignity that the island symbolizes for many other peoples of the planet.
She also highlighted Cuba's example of sending medical brigades to several countries during the Covid-19 pandemic, in a culture of solidarity and selfless aid, which contrasts with the quest for profit and the hoarding of vaccines and medicines that the world is currently witnessing.
Everything that is happening in Latin America gives us hope and we believe that Cuba is at the center of this new imaginary that is being created in the region. For us it is also a model for thinking about a better future, he added.
In this sense, he assured that this medal is a moment of reiteration of our spirit of solidarity with Cuba and an impulse to dedicate ourselves a little more to all the work to improve society in India.
The defense of the Cuban Revolution is, therefore, the defense of our own struggle for a better future.
