St. Pölten City Council Reaffirms Its Commitment to Cooperation and Solidarity with Cuba

Vienna, May 20, 2026. – The St. Pölten City Council welcomed a delegation from the Cuban Embassy led by Ambassador Pablo Berti Oliva. As part of a working visit to the capital of Lower Austria, the ambassador met with Mayor Matthias Stadler.

During the meeting, held in the mayor’s office, both officials discussed ways to strengthen cooperation ties between St. Pölten and Cuba. The Ambassador addressed Cuba’s major economic and political challenges, particularly in the context of the current geopolitical situation and ongoing tensions with the United States, marked by the intensification of the blockade through recent executive orders. The Mayor expressed interest in the situation in Cuba and the effects of the U.S. blockade, and reiterated his willingness to continue strengthening ties with Cuba and its Embassy in Austria.

The visit to this city, sponsored by the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), included a tour of the facilities of “Bioenergie St. Pölten,” a local power plant that generates energy from biomass, as well as other activities related to the city’s history.

The delegation from the Cuban Embassy also held other meetings with local officials and politicians, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the long-standing relationship with St. Pölten.

St. Pölten is the capital of the federal state of Lower Austria and has been led by Mayor Matthias Stadler since 2004.
