The Socialist Workers’ Party of Croatia (SRP) declares its solidarity with the people of socialist Cuba and strongly condemns the criminal actions of the government of the United States and its president, Donald Trump.
On January 29, 2026, the imperialist regime of the United States, in the person of its president, signed a new fascist decree, declaring Cuba—a small, sovereign nation—an “extraordinary threat” and imposing tariffs in order to choke its fuel supply. The U.S. has entered a new, desperate phase of its more than six-decade-long genocidal blockade.
This is an act of economic war and terrorism. Its explicit aim is to strangle the Cuban economy, create hunger and darkness in homes and hospitals, and provoke social unrest in order to achieve what imperialism has failed to accomplish for 65 years: to destroy the Cuban Revolution and recolonize the island.
SRP recognizes this attack for what it is: a direct assault on the sovereignty of all peoples who dare to resist the dictates of Washington and Wall Street. The heroic Cuban people, under the leadership of President Miguel Díaz-Canel and the Communist Party, have rightly denounced this escalation as “criminal” and “fascist.”
The United States seeks to overthrow Cuban socialism in order to plunder the country’s wealth—nickel, cobalt, fertile land, and its advanced biotechnology sector—for the profit of its monopolies, vulture funds, and pharmaceutical cartels. They want to turn Cuba into a neocolonial casino, resort, and source of exploited labor.
The blockade, which Trump is further intensifying, is a weapon of the international bourgeoisie against the global proletariat. By punishing Cuba for its socialist achievements such as free healthcare, education, and internationalist solidarity, the U.S. threatens all workers of the world—resistance to capital will be met with collective punishment and starvation.
This act exposes the return of naked, unvarnished imperial hegemonism in Latin America. From the blockade and plunder of Venezuelan oil to threats against Mexico, U.S. imperialism under Trump openly proclaims its “right” to dominate the hemisphere through blackmail, coercion, and economic siege.
The blockade is a crime against humanity and a total violation of the United Nations Charter, international law, and the Geneva Conventions. It is a form of warfare that deliberately targets civilians, as acknowledged by 165 countries in the UN General Assembly. The United States, together with its client regimes, stands morally and politically isolated before the entire world.
The Socialist Workers’ Party of Croatia declares its unwavering support for the Republic of Cuba. We call on the working class, trade unions, and all progressive forces in Croatia and across Europe to energetically condemn this latest fascist escalation by the U.S. government; to demand that European governments and the EU defy U.S. extraterritorial blackmail; to reject the blockade and establish normal trade and diplomatic relations with Cuba; to organize material and political solidarity to help Cuba overcome this siege; and to expose the agents of imperialism in their own countries who justify or enable this economic war.
The Cuban people have taught the world the meaning of dignity and resistance. From their victory at the Bay of Pigs to the internationalist missions of their doctors, they have proven that a world based on solidarity is possible.
The decaying American empire, in its death throes, is becoming ever more brutal—but its time is running out. The future belongs to socialism and the solidarity of the world’s peoples.
The people of Cuba must not and will not bow to imperialist pressure!
