Statement of the Socialist Workers'Party of Croatia: For Loud Global Support to End the Criminal American Blockade of Cuba!
The Socialist Workers' Party of Croatia (SRP) addresses the working people of Croatia and the international community at a crucial moment. Tomorrow, the United Nations General Assembly will once again vote on a resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.” This year's vote is not just a diplomatic formality; it is proof of global justice and a direct clash between imperialist aggression and the right of peoples to self-determination.
We are witnesses to a desperate and cynical campaign by the American government, which in recent weeks has exerted intimidating and deceptive pressure on numerous countries, particularly in Latin America and Europe, in a crude attempt to force them to abandon their historic support for Cuba. The US is distributing slanderous documents that falsely label Cuba, a nation that has declared Latin America a Zone of Peace, as a “threat to international peace and security.” This is gunboat diplomacy of the 21st century, an unfair and manipulative strategy that must be countered with loud global resistance.
The international community has spoken with a clear and consistent voice for decades. The American blockade is a clear violation of international law and the UN Charter, and its devastating effects on the Cuban people are undeniable.
The blockade is not a bilateral dispute; it is a unilateral coercive measure imposed by the United States, and rejected by the entire world. As the European Union itself has stated, the American embargo “impedes economic development” and “does not contribute to promoting” the well-being of the Cuban people.
The upcoming vote on October 28 and 29, 2025, is not symbolic. It is a concrete act of solidarity. The Socialist Workers' Party of Croatia issues an urgent call to all countries of the world.
We call on all United Nations member states to vote "FOR" the resolution to end the blockade. A vote for the resolution is a vote for international law, for the sovereignty of nations, and for the fundamental human rights of the Cuban people.
We call on all governments, especially those in Latin America and Europe currently under American pressure, to remain firm; not to yield to threats and intimidation because their foreign policy sovereignty is at stake. Yielding to this "gunboat diplomacy" means betraying the principles of self-determination and the collective will of the Global South.
The world must once again show that the United States and its few servile countries are the ones on the wrong side of history. Let the vote be a testament to their absolute isolation on this issue.
The arguments used by the United States to justify this policy are as hollow as they are hypocritical. While claiming to “stand with the Cuban people,” they enforce a blockade that the United Nations has repeatedly condemned as a violation of human rights. This policy is, as recognized by international policy experts, an “epic failure” that has not achieved its stated goals, but has instead ensured that “Cubans struggle daily to meet their basic needs.”
The blockade is a major obstacle to Cuba's development, deliberately designed to cause poverty, suffering, hardship, and scarcity in order to destabilize a sovereign government. Its economic damage is staggering, with recently estimated losses of 7.556 billion US dollars in just one year and cumulative costs over six decades running into trillions of dollars. This is, clearly and simply, an economic war.
Cuba's struggle is our struggle. The vote in the United Nations is a front in the broader class war between imperialism and the peoples of the world. The Socialist Workers' Party of Croatia stands in unwavering solidarity with the people of Cuba and their socialist revolution.
We call on the working class, youth, and all progressive forces in Croatia and abroad to mobilize, to pressure their governments to do the right thing, and to show the people's will to end this criminal blockade!
