An emotional tribute to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, was held at the historic City Hall in Port of Spain on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.
The event was supported by the Mayor of Port of Spain, Chinua Alleyne, and included the participation of solidarity organizations such as Friends of Cuba and members of the Association of Cuban Residents “Abraza a Cuba.” Political and social leaders, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Trinidad and Tobago, representatives of international organizations, as well as friends of Cuba from different sectors of Trinidad and Tobago society, were also in attendance.
Among the distinguished guests were the Head of the Tobago House of Assembly, Farley Augustine; Mickela Pandey, leader of the Patriotic Front; and David Abdulah, leader of the Movement for Social Justice.
One of the most significant moments of the event was the dramatization of excerpts from History Will Absolve Me, performed by prominent Trinidadian artists, who brought to the stage the strength and continuing relevance of the historic defense speech delivered by Fidel more than six decades ago.
The tribute was also an opportunity to remember Fidel’s ideas, work, and legacy, as well as his profound commitment to Latin American, Caribbean, and international solidarity. One hundred years after his birth, his legacy continues to inspire reflection, dialogue, and recognition among those who value history and the bonds of friendship between Cuba and the peoples of the Caribbean.
Another deeply moving moment of the evening was the presentation of a message sent by a Hero of the Republic of Cuba and President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), who recounted to those present the encouragement and support that he and his comrades always received from the Commander during the years they were imprisoned in U.S. prisons for fighting and defending Cuba against terrorism. He also expressed his gratitude for the solidarity and support shown by the people of Trinidad and Tobago during these very difficult times for the Cuban people.
In his remarks, Cuban Ambassador Gustavo Véliz denounced the energy siege to which the Cuban population is being subjected, as well as the unjust and criminal economic, financial, and commercial blockade that Cuba has endured for more than 60 years.
