Port of Spain, ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago, 16 may 2015. – His Excellency Guillermo Vázquez Moreno, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cuba to Trinidad and Tobago, paid a courtesy call on University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal, Professor Clement Sankat on April 22. The two met to discuss possibilities for collaboration, particularly in Research and Innovation Management Systems, Molecular Science, Agro-processing, specialist Health Services, Music, Arts and Culture, Software Development, Informatics and the preservation of historical buildings. Also in attendance was Mr. Sharan Singh, Director of The UWI St. Augustine’s Office of Institutional Advancement and Internationalization.
Among the other outcomes of the meeting were talks to explore the potential for the establishment of Postgraduate exchange programmer between both countries and the possibility of facilitating Cuban students to pursue their higher degrees at The UWI under its Pan-Caribbean initiative. Mention was also made of cultural exchange initiatives that would see top artistes and musicians from both nations paying reciprocal visits to promote cross-cultural awareness and innovation. Professor Sankat also used the opportunity to congratulate the Ambassador on Cuba’s significant accomplishments in the areas of Healthcare, Agriculture, the Arts and Science and Technology.
His Excellency, Ambassador Moreno, made mention of an invitation extended earlier in 2015 by the Cuban Ministry of Higher Education to The UWI St. Augustine to visit Cuba. This visit, he hopes, will contribute to enhancing the sustainability and impact of the relationship between Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago.
