Addis Ababa, November 22, 2023.- The Vice-President of Cuba, Salvador Valdés Mesa, met with Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission. During the meeting, both parties discussed the ties between Cuba and Africa.
The Cuban vice president said that Africa is an essential part of Cuba's history and traditions and that our commitment to this continent is eternal.
The Deputy Chairperson of the AU Commission reiterated the support of the Assembly of the African Union for Cuba's fight against the blockade of the US Government and highlighted the achievements obtained in "the area of Health, which have become an example for the world", and for this reason, she said, "we defend the cooperation they maintain in that area with our countries, not only in terms of medical care, but also in the training of professionals."
He commented on the African Union's interest in deepening cooperation with Cuba in three fundamental areas: medical collaboration, response to natural disasters and education.
Fifty-five are the member countries of the African Union and Cuba has diplomatic relations with all of them, which shows, Valdés Mesa said, how much priority the Caribbean island gives to its ties with African nations.
"We are ready to continue working in collaboration with the African Union in the areas of mutual interest that we have identified," he said. In this regard, he referred to the medical cooperation that is currently being carried out in 29 nations of the continent, as well as the training of professionals in Cuban universities.
"Beyond the limitations we have, we will continue to collaborate with African countries in everything that we can be useful, and we will continue to promote the development of our relations," said the Vice President of the Republic of Cuba.
To the African Union, he assured, "all the thanks for the support they have always given in various international arenas to our fight against the economic, commercial and financial blockade."
