Monrovia, June 11th, 2018-, In the morning hours of Monday, the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, Mrs. Jewel Cianeh Howard-Taylor received at his office located in the Capitol of Liberia, headquarter of the Parliament of that nation, the Charge d'Affaires of the Cuban Embassy, Yordenis Despaigne Vera. The vice-governor was accompanied by T. Titus Charley, advisor of the vicepresident, George Tenessee Nimely, chief of staff and members of the press team. On the Cuban side, the Second Secretary, Carmen Maury Toledo, also participated.
The meeting, which took place in an atmosphere of cordiality, was an appropriate occasion to address various issues on the bilateral agenda between both countries, with a view to expanding and consolidating the diplomatic ties established in April 1974. The head of the Cuban state mission transmitted to her a congratulatory message, on behalf of the Cuban government and people, for her election as second in charge of the new administration of that West African nation. He also reiterated the gratitude of Cuba for the permanent support of Liberia to the Major of the Antilles in various multilateral forums, in the fight against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba for more than 50 years. He also ratified the willingness of the Cuban government to contribute, based on its modest resources, to the recovery of the health system of Liberia or other areas that may be mutually beneficial.
For his part, Howard-Taylor, after thanking the visit made by the representative of Cuban diplomacy, stressed the ability of Cuba to ensure the training of high-level professionals in key areas such as health and education and highlighted the importance that Liberia and Cuba work together in these areas, in order to raise the quality of life of the Liberian population, particularly women and young people.
Born on January 17, 1963 in the town of Zorzor, Lofa County, Jewel C. Howard-Taylor holds two Bachelor's degrees in Economics and a Master's Degree in Business Administration. She was elected Senator for Bong County in 2006, a position she still holds and was first lady from 1997 to 2003, during the presidency of her ex - husband, Charles Taylor. She was elected vice president in October 2017, when she was presented as the running mate of the presidential candidate and former soccer player George Manneh Weah for the Coalition for Democratic Change.
