"In honoring, we honor". The "Latin American Square" in the Danube Park (Donaupark), where the bust of José Martí is located, in Vienna, was the scene, as every year, of the well-deserved tribute that the Cuban Embassy in Austria, the Association of Cuban Residents in this country "Cuba Va" and the Austria-Cuba Friendship Association "ÖKG", offer to the most universal of Cubans in his birth. This year, the 167th.
On the occasion, the Cuban Ambassador, Loipa Sánchez Lorenzo and the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Justice, Dr. Pilar Alicia Varona Estrada, placed an offering of white roses before the bust of José Martí. The Ambassador pronounced emotional words of remembrance to the life and work of the Master, highlighting his permanent struggle to achieve the unity of all Cubans and of the Great Homeland of Latin America, to achieve its freedom and independence.
Ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps of Latin America and the Caribbean accredited in Austria were present at the event, as well as the community of Cubans living in this country and friends of the solidarity movement.
Songs with verses by José Martí were performed by Cuban musicians Miguel Leonardo García, Emilio Pérez Mena and Nelson Williams Herrera.
Martí's bust was unveiled on May 19th, 2004, as a result of a joint effort between the ÖKG, the Cuban Ministry of Culture and the City of Vienna. The work is in bronze, built to life size by the renowned Cuban artist Alberto Lezcay.
