Vienna, October 8. The Cuban Embassy in Austria, together with the Austria-Cuba Friendship Association (ÖKG), the Communist Youth of Austria (KJÖ), and members of the diplomatic corps, commemorated today the 58th anniversary of Ernesto Che Guevara's death in combat.
The emotional ceremony, held at the Paseo de los Próceres Latinoamericanos in the Danube Park, stood out for its call for unity and the continued relevance of Guevara's example in times of global challenges.
This year, the ceremony was led by Reinier Travieso Guerra, Cuba's chargé d'affaires a.i. in Austria, who in his remarks recalled that Che was our antidote to the injustices that occur in the world and that he is the driving force behind our struggles.
As in previous years, Che's bust was the centerpiece of a tribute where flowers and reflections were intertwined. Members of the Communist Party of Chile stood out, emphasizing the importance of keeping alive the struggle for social justice in the region. “Che is not a symbol of the past, he is a beacon for the struggles of the present,” said one of their representatives.
To conclude, attendees carried flags to the foot of the monument, singing “Hasta Siempre, Comandante” in a multilingual chorus that echoed in the Viennese sunset.
