Wreath-laying ceremony in tribute to the victims of the Barbados crime

Port of Spain, October 5th, 2025. The Ambassador of Cuba, Gustavo Veliz Olivares, together with the Honorable Eli Zakour, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, and the Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Mr. Nicholas Morris, laid a floral offering at Piarco Airport, Trinidad and Tobago.

During the solemn ceremony, held on the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the terrorist attack against CUBANA Airlines flight CU 455 in 1976, speeches were delivered by Mr. Nicholas Morris, Mr. David Abdulah, leader of the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ), and Mr. Clyde Callender, President of the “Friends of Cuba” group.

Mr. Morris expressed solidarity with Cuba, conveyed condolences for the loss of human lives, and expressed gratitude for Cuba’s gestures of assistance toward Trinidad and Tobago.

Mr. Callender and Mr. Abdulah both called for the lifting of the blockade and the removal of Cuba from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

Ambassador Veliz highlighted that Cuba does not sponsor terrorism, opposes all forms of terrorism, and expressed gratitude to the countries that have supported Cuba over the years, calling for an end to the blockade and Cuba’s removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Ms. Ayesha Wharton, Director of CARICOM Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, and Mr. Sean Henry, representing the National Police Commissioner, also attended the ceremony, along with airport authorities, ambassadors, and diplomats accredited from Mexico, Panama, Venezuela, Chile, and China.

Also present were members of the Cuban Medical Brigade and Cuban residents in Trinidad and Tobago.
