Ambassador Sergio Vigoa of the Uz held an emotional exchange with a group of young Namibians who will travel to Cuba to study technical careers and postgraduate courses at universities on the island.
The group, coming from various regions of Namibia, listened expectantly to the Cuban diplomat narrate passages of history that have strengthened the brotherhood between both peoples, one of whose most relevant pages was the extraordinary role of Cuban soldiers who in 1978 managed to save Namibian refugees in the Kasinga camp, located in Angolan territory, after they were vilely attacked by South African planes.
The ambassador explained to the young people that a few months after this brutal act of genocide, by agreement of the Cuban government and the SWAPO Party, children who survived the massacre and other Namibian children and young people traveled to Cuba, who were trained in Cuban schools, some of them up to the university level.
It was especially emotional to learn about the heroic act of the more than two thousand Cubans who shed their blood in achieving the definitive independence of Namibia; and the establishment of diplomatic relations between both governments on March 20, 1990.
Vigoa de la Uz also recounted the history of collaboration that we have built. “After independence, Cuba began supporting the training of Namibian human resources as a way to contribute to the economic and social development of this brother country,” he commented. "Thousands of Cuban collaborators have passed through here since 1990, coming from various sectors such as health, agriculture, fishing, education, sports, construction, energy, among others."
The ambassador said with pride that the Namibians who have been educated in our country today make up the solidarity movement towards Cuba and the voice of this African nation is raised in international forums in favor of the elimination of the United States blockade against Cuba and the removal from the list of State sponsors of terrorism.
In response to questions from the young people related to the situation on the island today, the Cuban representative explained to them the tense situation in our country, derived from the intensified policy of economic aggression of the United States, together with a fierce disinformation campaign in social networks, financed with tens of millions of dollars every year, with the sole purpose of overthrowing our government and the socialism that we have decided to build.
The ambassador congratulated the young people for their decision to study in our country, wished them a happy stay and urged them to get to know Cuban culture, make friends and take advantage of this extraordinary stage of professional and human learning to return to contribute to economic and social of “the land of the Braves”.
