Harare, 18 January 2025- The Zimbabwe Anti-Sanctions Trust today reiterated its solidarity with the people of Cuba in facing the challenges of the prolonged economic blockade imposed by the United States.
We recognise that while steps have been taken to ease some sanctions, such as the removal of the unjust list of countries sponsoring terrorism, they fall short in addressing the fundamental rights and freedoms of Cubans, emphasises a statement released in this capital.
The US blockade has been in place for more than six decades, significantly affecting the island's economy and the daily lives of its citizens.
The Anti-Sanctions Organisation considers that this policy has restricted access to essential goods, health care and economic opportunities, causing widespread suffering among the population and is not only a political tool, but a violation of basic human rights.
According to the statement, the recent decision of the White House should be considered a step in the right direction, but must be accompanied by a complete removal of all restrictions to facilitate the prosperity of Cubans without external interference.
We call on international bodies, governments and civil society organisations around the world to advocate for the complete lifting of the US blockade of the Caribbean nation.
It is imperative that we unite our voices to demand an end to policies that undermine human dignity and hinder progress. The people of Cuba have demonstrated resilience and strength in their quest for self-determination and deserve our support, the document states.
We reaffirm our commitment to the struggle of our Cuban brothers and sisters for justice, equality and fundamental human rights and urge respect for the sovereignty of all nations, the statement concludes.
The Anti-Sanctions Trust is a movement that advocates for a united Zimbabwe, defends the environment in favour of economic development on the basis of equality and opposes coercive measures against other states, including those imposed on the African nation.
