January 15 - Cuban Science Day

A day like today in 1960, during the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Speleological Society of Cuba, in the auditorium of the Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana, the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro gave a historic speech in which he emphasized: "The future of our Homeland has to be, necessarily, a future of men of science, of men of thought". This date has been chosen to commemorate the Cuban Science Day.

The Ministry of Science and Technology (CITMA) of Cuba, the Cuban Research Centers and all Cubans commemorate this special day.

Cuba: Infant Mortality Stayed Low in 2020

Despite the problems caused by the strengthened U.S. blockade, Cuba is one of the 35 countries with the lowest mortality rates in the world.

Cuba's Health Ministry (MINSAP) reported an infant mortality rate of 4.9 per 1,000 live births in 2020 despite the pressures put by the COVID-19 pandemic and U.S. sanctions on the health system.

Experiencing a reduction in the under-five years' mortality rate, the Caribbean island also reported its lowest mortality rate due to congenital malformations at 0.7 per 1,000 live births.
