Fifty countries have ratified an international treaty to ban nuclear weapons, the United Nations has announced, allowing the “historic” text to enter into force in 90 days.

Honduras became the 50th country to ratify the landmark Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), the UN said on Saturday, in a move hailed by anti-nuclear activists but strongly opposed by the United States and the other major nuclear powers.

'Cuba defends its independence from the US empire,' says Diaz-Canel

Havana, Oct 10 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's President Miguel Diaz-Canel affirmed on Saturday that the country continues defending its independence from the US empire, as commemorating today the 152nd anniversary of the beginning of independent struggles.

The president recalled on Twitter the armed uprising against the Spanish metropolis, which occurred on October 10, 1868, about which he noted it was 'the first day of freedom.'
