Press Release/ 71 UNGA: “Cuba calls for strict respect of the UN Charter in the application of the universal jurisdiction principle.”

New York, 11 October 2016. The Cuban delegate to the Sixth Committee Tanieris Diéguez Lao offered today great importance to the item: “The scope and application of the principle of universal jurisdiction”, at the time she reiterated Cuba’s concern for the inappropriate use of this principle in the unilateral, selective and politically motivated exercise of jurisdiction by tribunals in developing countries’, against natural or legal persons, from developing countries, without coming from an international norm or treaty.

Press Release/71 UNGA: “Cuba in its efforts for sustainable development and disaster risk reduction”.

New York, 11 October 2016. “The implementation of the 2030 Agenda, and in like manner, the Samoa Pathway as indispensable social development frameworks of Small Island States reinforce the importance of counting on an effective global alliance for development”, expressed the delegate of Cuba to the Second Committee, Yilianne Sánchez Rodríguez, after pointing out the need to change the unsustainable production and consumption patterns of current societies and advance in setting sustainable development models, that root out inequality, discrimination, poverty and social exclusion.

New York, 11 October 2016. The Cuban delegate to the Sixth Committee, Tanieris Diéguez Lao, on Agenda item "Report of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization", underscored the importance for respect and promotion of the norms of the UN Charter, as well as, the preservation and strengthening of the leading role of the General Assembly, in its capacity of primary policy-making body, deliberation and representation of the United Nations.

New York, 10 October 2016. Cuba stressed today that the constant imperialist aggressions and the permanent interferences in the internal affairs of third world countries; the plundering of their wealth and the promotion of regional conflicts for economic and political benefits; the systematic destruction of these peoples’ infrastructures and indiscriminate slaughtering of innocent civilians are the main causes nowadays for the violation of International Humanitarian Law.

New York, 10 October 2016. “Cuba stands firm in its conviction that a key requirement towards the full realization of gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls is the achievement of a new equitable and just international order, ensuring the eradication of poverty and hunger, the end of armed conflicts, the value of human beings above capital and the preservation of the environment”, noted the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, at the UN Third Committee on Agenda item: “Advancement of Women”.
