New York, 21 October 2016. Despite the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States, the reopening of embassies in both capitals and the visit of President Obama to Havana, the Embargo is still in force. A number of international and regional forums have demanded an end to that genocidal policy in special communiqués, declarations and resolutions.

At the General Assembly Plenary, under Agenda item: “Commemoration of the abolition of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade”, the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, noted that slave trade and the legacy of slavery are the root causes of profound social and economic inequalities, hatred, fanaticism, racism and prejudice that today continue to affect people of African descent.

The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Rodolfo Reyes Rodríguez, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Cuba, extended this afternoon his warmest congratulations to Mr. Antonio Guterres on his election as Secretary-General of the United Nations, as part of the Informal Session of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly with Designate Secretary-General.
New York, 19 October, 2016. Within the U.S. society there has always been an important number of sectors that have been opposed to the absurd policy of the Embargo against Cuba. The U.S. press has echoed these claims: The New York Times and Bloomberg have spotlighted the growing bipartite support and that of U.S. society in general in favor of lifting the Embargo against Cuba. They have even issued appeals to the U.S. Congress supporting a new policy towards Cuba based on the fact that most of U.S. political and civil sectors, including those having Cuban origins, are in support.
