At the Committee on Decolonization, under item: The Question of Puerto Rico, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, defined the session as “a historic day” by the presence of Oscar López Rivera,a fighter against colonialism, imprisoned for more than 35 years in US prisons, struggling for the self-determination, independence and freedom of his homeland.

In the cordial meeting the good path of bilateral relations was confirmed, with special reference to the historical significance of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries to be marked in May 2018.

Press Release: The UN Special Committee on Decolonization adopts resolution presented by Cuba on the colonial case of Puerto Rico.

New York, 19 June 2017. The UN Special Committee on Decolonization adopted today another resolution, by consensus, on the Question of Puerto Rico, which already adds up to 35 in the last 17 years.

The Resolution, presented by Cuba and cosponsored by Nicaragua, Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Russia and Syria, is a proof of the historical commitment with the brotherly people of Puerto Rico and its patriots.
