Cuban healthcare professionals intensify their efforts to fight Covid-19 in Jamaica

Kingston, Jamaica, 5 August 2020. At the end of July, the contingent of Cuban doctors working in Jamaica reported a total of 49,838 consultations, deemed today as a notable increase in the joint efforts made to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

The President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, sent congratulatory messages to the Governor General of Jamaica, the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Linton Allen, and to the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Honourable Michael Andrew Holness, on the occasion of the upcoming 58th anniversary of the Independence of this sister Caribbean island, on August 6th. A similar message was sent by the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, to his Jamaican counterpart, Senator Kamina Johnson-Smith.

Despite the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, celebrations marking the Cuban Day of National Rebellion have been held in Jamaica and, adapted to the new situation, the Solidarity Movement with Cuba in this sister Caribbean island hosted a virtual forum under the motto 'The 26th July Movement and its relevance in the fight against the global pandemic', with a broad international participation.

On Friday July 24 in the afternoon, members of the collective of the Embassy of Cuba in Jamaica celebrated a political-cultural activity chaired by the Ambassador Inés Fors Fernández, Head of the State Mission, and Bernardino Miclín Dupuy, Secretary General of the PCC’s grassroot in the Embassy, to commemorate the 67th Anniversary of the Day of National Rebellion.

Inspired by the example of the young men that carried out the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, some 40 members of the Cuban State Mission in Jamaica - including part of the Embassy’s staff and members of the Cuban Medical and Education brigades- joined in a massive blood donation this morning to support Jamaica's efforts to combat Covid-19 and to commemorate, with an altruistic gesture worthy of those killed in that feat, the 67th Anniversary of the Day of National Rebellion.
