512 Anniversary of the Foundation of Baracoa

Baracoa, a National Monument of Cuba, is the oldest colonial city on the island, which is why it is known as the First City. All its charm is located at the eastern end of the island, in the province of Guantanamo.

The town was founded by the Spanish conquerors on August 15, 1511, under the name of "Our Lady of the Assumption of Baracoa".

This Cuban jewel is hidden among mountainous massifs with abundant and beautiful endemic vegetation, which also has crystalline rivers and paradisiacal beaches. Without a doubt, it is a unique exotic spot on the entire island; as evidenced by the highly preserved treasure Alejandro de Humboldt National Park.

Its narrow, cobbled streets are steeped in history, surrounded by old mansions that extend from Fuerte la Punta to the Matachín fortress, two of its most important attractions along with Seboruco Castle.

To the east of the Sierra de Moa is the majestic Yunque de Baracoa, a 575 m high mountain. It is distinguished by its peculiar shape, it resembles a large isolated plateau with a horizontal surface and almost vertical slopes. It constitutes the natural symbol of the city of Baracoa and was declared a Nature Monument.
