Addis Ababa, July 26, 2024.- (Prensa Latina) Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Elio Rodriguez today presided over the ceremony for the 71st anniversary of the assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks at the Caribbean island's embassy in Ethiopia.
Members of the Cuban diplomatic headquarters and state mission, nationals residing in the African country, members of the Association of Friendship between the Peoples of Ethiopia and Cuba, the chargé d'affaires of Nicaragua in Addis Ababa, Ali Waters, as well as members of the embassy of Venezuela attended the ceremony.
Rodríguez recalled that the struggles for the independence of the island began on October 10, 1868, frustrated by the intervention of the United States in 1898 and that later gave way to the Revolution of 1933 and other actions such as that of July 26, 1953 led by the historical leader Fidel Castro.
More than a hundred young people carried out the assaults with the purpose of starting the struggle to overthrow the dictator Fulgencio Batista (1952-1958), and despite suffering a setback and the murder of many comrades, they did not give up their efforts until they achieved, a little more than five years later, the triumph of their ideas, he added.
He specified that today at 05:40, Cuban time, the central act for the Day of National Rebellion took place in the central province of Sancti Spíritus with the presence of Army General Raúl Castro, President Miguel Díaz-Canel and the highest authorities of the country and that territory. "With great challenges and challenges we commemorate another July 26, but aware that we have been able to resist at this time and we will continue to resist and advance. For that we have the most important thing, the Cuban people, and also with the support of so many friends in the world like you," said Rodríguez.
Previously, a wreath was laid at the monument that perpetuates the memory of the 163 Cubans who fell in the battle of Karramara, whose victory on March 5, 1978 made it possible to protect Ethiopia's sovereignty and territorial integrity over the Ogaden desert against external expansionist attempts.
