Cuban Foreign Minister holds meeting with the new President of the African Union Commission

Addis Ababa, March 13, 2025.- As part of his official visit to Ethiopia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, held an important meeting today with the new president of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

During the meeting, the Cuban Foreign Minister conveyed to the new President of the AU the cordial congratulations of the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, for his recent election at the head of the continental organization, as well as the best wishes for success in the fulfillment of his high responsibilities.

Rodríguez Parrilla stressed the high importance that Cuba attaches to the African Union, as an essential space for the coordination and defense of the common interests of the African continent. He also underlined Cuba's firm commitment to continue strengthening the historical ties of solidarity, cooperation and brotherhood with Africa, and ratified the willingness to expand the areas of collaboration in various sectors.

The head of Cuban diplomacy also highlighted the key role of the African Union in promoting peace, security and sustainable development on the continent, while recognizing the valuable support of African countries to the Cuban cause in the fight against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States.

For his part, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed the appreciation of the African Union for Cuba's historic contribution to Africa's development, especially in sensitive areas such as health and education, as well as for the solidarity support provided in the most difficult times.

At the meeting, the Cuban Foreign Minister was accompanied by the Cuban ambassador to the African Union, Lucas Domingo Hernández Polledo, along with other officials of the delegation.

This dialogue reaffirms the common will to continue strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation between Cuba and the African Union, in a particularly significant year, when we commemorate 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and several African countries, including Ethiopia.
