Cuban Ambassador Juan Antonio Fernández met with Louise Arbour, UN Special Representative for International Migration who has also been appointed as Secretary General of Intergovernmental Conference to Adopt a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
The encounter took place in the margins of the Fifth Informal Thematic session entitled “Smuggling of migrants, trafficking in persons and contemporary forms of slavery, including appropriate identification, protection and assistance to migrants and trafficking victims” called on by the co-facilitators of the Conference.
They stressed the importance of working on this Global Compact that would reinforce the commitment of the international community for ensuring safe, orderly and regular migration. Besides, it would strengthen the legal international framework in this sensitive topic.
This Informal Thematic session is part of a group of six sessions called on by the co-facilitators to exchange opinions and domestic expertise on this issue prior to the beginning of the Global Compactnegotiation process.
