Addis Ababa, July 29, 2025.- During the Second Stocktaking Moment of the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS+4), held from July 27 to 29 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Dr. C. Elizabeth Peña Turruellas, Director of Urban, Suburban, and Family Agriculture at Cuba’s Ministry of Agriculture and National Convener for Food Systems, officially presented the National Roadmap for the sustainable transformation of food systems on the Island.
This strategic instrument is the result of a broad multisectoral consultation process and follows up on the commitments made by Cuba since the first summit in 2021, when President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez outlined the actions undertaken to ensure food security amid the country’s complex national context, marked by the U.S. blockade.
Peña Turruellas explained that the roadmap brings together the efforts of the government, academia, civil society, and producers, and aligns with the implementation of the Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education Plan (Plan SAN) and the Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Security Law (SSAN Law), legal frameworks that underpin Cuba’s food system model.
She also highlighted that currently 20 local programs are being implemented in municipal food systems aimed at reducing dependence on imports, promoting sustainable local production, and improving living conditions in rural communities.
The presentation demonstrated Cuba’s commitment to a fair, resilient, and inclusive food system, as well as to the implementation of comprehensive public policies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.
