Harare, September 25, 2025 - The Cuban Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Her Excellency Ms. Susellys Pérez Mesa, and the Director and Representative of the UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa, Nisha, today discussed the application of science, technology, and innovation for the development of nations.
During a courtesy meeting, Pérez Mesa updated the Caribbean island nation on the priorities of government programs in science, innovation, and technology and discussed with Nisha the opportunities for cooperation on projects in this African country.
The parties recognized the traditionally good relations between Cuba and UNESCO, highlighting the active role of the Caribbean nation in the declaration of sites and works as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Accompanied by program executives from the UN agency with Zimbabwe, the Head of Mission and the Regional Representative discussed opportunities for collaboration in the areas of culture and heritage conservation.
They also lamented the cuts in funding from major donors and the impact this has on the advancement of UNESCO's valuable programs.
The Ambassador highlighted the impact of the US blockade on the island, especially in the areas of science, culture, and education, while highlighting Cuba's achievements despite Washington's hostile policy.
