Vienna, September 16. The Minister of Science, Technology, and Environment of the Republic of Cuba, Dr. Armando Rodríguez Batista, was received by the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Dr. Robert Floyd, during his working visit to Vienna.
During the meeting, the Cuban Minister conveyed his willingness to work together to achieve the goal of the total elimination of nuclear testing. The two dignitaries discussed the state of relations between Cuba and the CTBTO and the possibility of expanding them, while highlighting the Cuban government's decision to sign an agreement on the use of seismological and hydroacoustic data for tsunami warning, a ceremony that took place at the conclusion of the meeting.
Cuba was the 185th country to sign and the 169th to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, after depositing its instrument of ratification on February 4, 2021. The Executive Secretary made an official visit to Cuba between March 30 and April 2, 2025.
With a network of more than 300 certified facilities, the CTBTO records data that can be used, in addition to its primary mandate, for other purposes such as disaster mitigation, earthquake monitoring, tsunami warning, or possible radioactive leaks in nuclear accidents.
