Vienna, September 16. On Tuesday, Cuba signed a tsunami warning agreement with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) to improve planning and response capabilities in the event of this type of natural disaster.
The agreement between Cuba and the CTBTO Preparatory Commission took place at the organization's headquarters and was signed by its Executive Secretary, Dr. Robert Floyd, and Cuba's Minister of Science, Technology, and Environment, Dr. Armando Rodríguez Batista.
The agreement will enable the Cuban Civil Defense to receive real-time data recorded at CTBTO seismic stations located in the region. The reception of this data will mean a substantial improvement for Cuba in its capabilities to detect and characterize earthquakes that could cause tsunamis and, with this, an increase in the speed and reliability of the warning system.
The CTBTO is the organization that aims to develop the terms of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, approved by the United Nations General Assembly in 1996. The Preparatory Commission of this Vienna-based organization has an international monitoring system based on a network of seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasonic, and radionuclide stations. Among its scientific objectives is to support tsunami warning systems by utilizing its own infrastructure.
