Scottish Parliament Group Expresses Solidarity with Cuba and Condemns US Aggression

London, 21 January 2026.- The Embassy of Cuba in the United Kingdom expresses its profound gratitude for a formal message of solidarity and condolence received from the Scottish Parliament’s Cross Party Group for Cuba following the recent US military aggression in Venezuela.

In a letter addressed to Her Excellency Ambassador Ismara Mercedes Vargas Walter, Carol Mochan MSP offered the group’s "deepest condolences for the 32 Cuban Service Personnel who were killed during attacks by the United States in Venezuela on 3rd January 2026".

The correspondence highlights the shared sadness with the families of the fallen soldiers, noting they lost their lives "performing duties on behalf of Cuba and in service to the people of Venezuela". The letter also acknowledges the shockwaves caused by the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

The Cross Party Group provided a strong rebuke of current US foreign policy. Ms Mochan wrote that the "inhumane policy of US Government sanctions" has been recognised by Scotland for many years. The group stated unequivocally that "the use of a blockade to challenge your sovereignty is as unjustified as the recent military aggression we have seen designed to reorient resources in the region".

Reaffirming the ties between Scotland and Cuba, the letter emphasised that the Cross Party Group will "work to ensure Scotland condemns all unjust military aggression in Latin America and the Caribbean by the United States".

The message concluded with a pledge from the politicians involved to continue working with Cuba toward "international relations, sovereignty of resources, prosperity and peace". The Embassy of Cuba welcomes this courageous statement of support; the representatives of Scotland have sent a powerful message that they stand clearly for sovereignty and the rights of the Cuban and Venezuelan peoples.
