The occasion that brings us together this afternoon is a very sad one. We are overcome by a great sadness, and an even greater indignation at the American barbarity and its total violation of the most fundamental norms of International Law, and its lack of respect for the sovereignty of other States.
On the afternoon of this Thursday, January 8, 2026, friends of Solidarity with Cuba and Cuban residents in Canada gathered at the Cuban Embassy in Ottawa to condemn the aggression of the United States against Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, as well as to pay a heartfelt tribute to the fallen combatants.
Several of the attendees took the floor to express their solidarity with Venezuela and Cuba, and to condemn the imperialist barbarism led by the Trump administration.

As a result of the criminal attack perpetrated by the United States government against the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, carried out in the early morning of January 3, 2026, 32 Cubans lost their lives in combat. They were serving on missions representing the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, at the request of their counterparts in the South American country.
