Cuban Ambassador Visits the Lloyd Best Institute of the Caribbean in Tunapuna

Port of Spain, March 27, 2026. The Ambassador of Cuba to Trinidad and Tobago, Gustavo Véliz Olivares, paid a visit to the headquarters of the Lloyd Best Institute of the Caribbean in Tunapuna, where he held a cordial meeting with Sunnity Maharaj and other members of the Institute’s board.
During the meeting, the diplomat expressed his appreciation for the Institute’s interest in Cuban affairs, as well as for its expressions of solidarity in light of the country’s current situation, marked by the tightening of the blockade and the energy constraints resulting from an Executive Order issued by the President of the United States on January 29.

For their part, the Institute’s directors provided a detailed overview of their work and the longstanding ties they have maintained with Cuba.
As part of the visit, Carmel Maharaj Best, on behalf of the Institute, presented the Ambassador with a copy of the book The Theory of Plantation Economy, authored by Lloyd Best and Kari Polanyi Levitt, and published in Cuba by Casa de las Américas.
