Tribute to Gilberto Bosques and Commemoration of the Commander-in-Chief on the 100th Anniversary of His Birth

Port of Spain, April 17, 2025. The screening of the documentary “Cuadernos de La Habana. Gilberto Bosques en Cuba” provided an appropriate occasion to remember the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, on the centenary of his birth. The documentary, produced by TV UNAM and written and directed by His Excellency Miguel Díaz Reynoso, Mexico’s ambassador in Havana, highlights Castro’s close ties with Mexico.
During the event, held in the context of the 65th anniversary of the mercenary invasion at Bay of Pigs Invasion, ambassadors Víctor Hugo Morales of Mexico and Gustavo Véliz Olivares of Cuba reflected on the events portrayed in the documentary and on the role played by Gilberto Bosques during his time in Havana.

Ambassador Morales noted that, although many recall the history of the Granma yacht, lesser-known events before and after the revolutionary triumph—marked by Mexico’s solidarity with Cuba—often go unnoticed. In this regard, he emphasized the importance of the documentary in raising awareness about the need to promote solidarity among peoples. He also referred to his government’s position on the current situation in Cuba, highlighting that it reflects a longstanding policy of support and mutual respect between sister nations. He further underscored the importance of preserving the legacy of Gilberto Bosques for future generations of Mexican diplomats.

For his part, Ambassador Véliz expressed gratitude for the initiative taken by his Mexican counterpart and spoke about the historic ties of friendship between the two countries. He emphasized that Mexico was the only Latin American country that did not sever relations with Cuba following its expulsion from the Organization of American States. He also acknowledged and thanked Mexico for its continued solidarity with Cuba, even amid the difficult conditions the country faces due to the intensification of the U.S. blockade and the energy constraints affecting Cuba. Additionally, he referred to significant historical events and figures shared by both nations, such as General Lázaro Cárdenas and Cuba’s National Hero, José Martí.
Also present at the event were Álvaro Sánchez Cordero, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps; other ambassadors and members of Hispanic American embassies accredited in Trinidad and Tobago; the Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States, Noemí Espinoza Madrid; representatives of United Nations Environment Programme and World Food Programme; members of the Cuban Medical Brigade; Cuban residents in Trinidad and Tobago; among other participants.
