Solidarity Campaign with Cuba Gains Momentum in the Streets of Vienna

Vienna, May 9 – Solidarity with Cuba took to the streets of the Austrian capital once again this Saturday, when members of the Austria-Cuba Friendship Association (ÖKG) organized an intensive day of outreach, recruitment of new members, and fundraising on the iconic Mariahilferstraße, one of Vienna’s busiest commercial and pedestrian thoroughfares.

According to the Association’s leaders, the goal of the event was clear: to strengthen solidarity efforts with the island at a critical moment, marked by the intensification of the U.S. blockade through the recent Executive Orders of January 29 and May 1.

Throughout the day, ÖKG members distributed informational materials—pamphlets and flyers detailing the organization’s ongoing work, the current situation in Cuba, and the urgency of redoubling solidarity efforts to confront the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States.

At the same time, the activists did not limit themselves to providing information: they openly denounced the unprecedented aggression against the Cuban people resulting from the U.S. administration’s new executive orders. They also distributed the Declaration of Support for Cuba, adopted on May 8 by their Executive Board.

During their street demonstrations, they called for stronger action to take a firm stand in defense of Cuba and international law.

The response from passersby was immediate. Many people who sympathized with the cause decided to contribute donations to the ÖKG’s account, while others approached to ask about the situation in Cuba and how they could support the solidarity organization.

“Today, Mariahilferstraße became Cuba Street,” said ÖKG activists at the end of the day.

This Saturday’s event was not an isolated incident. It serves as a mobilizing prelude to the now-traditional Street Festival for Cuba, organized annually by the ÖKG, which in 2026 will take place on May 30 in Seisgasse, the organization’s headquarters. That event is expected to bring together friends of Cuba for a day of culture, music, information, and solidarity.

Initiatives like this demonstrate that despite the smear campaigns and economic strangulation measures driven by Washington, Cuba is not alone. The Cuban people can count on the organized and growing solidarity of the Austrian friendship movement, even from the streets of Vienna.
