Cuba and New Zealand extend cooperation agreement that impacts health services in the Pacific

Wellington, September 11th, 2018. Cuba and New Zealand signed today in Wellington the extension of a cooperation agreement to support Cuban medical assistance in the Pacific.

The document, signed by Jonathan Kings, Undersecretary of the Pacific and Development Group at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trad and the Ambassador of Cuba, Mario Alzugaray Rodríguez, marks the commitment from both nations to continue promoting cooperation with the Pacific island nations.

The original agreement, signed in February 2015, establishes the framework for English language training for Cuban doctors who provide their services in the region.

Cuban doctors serve currently in the Kiribati, Nauru and Vanuatu. Meanwhile, a total of 101 young Pacific islanders are studding in Cuban universities, primarily medicine related careers. Their future graduation will add to the total of more than 200 professionals in the region who have benefited from scholarships granted by the Cuban government and would exercise their profession in their own nations.
