Kingston, Jamaica, 20 December 2018. The Ministry of Health of Jamaica was the venue for the official signing ceremony of a protocol for the extension of Technical Cooperation agreements on Health between Cuba and Jamaica.
The document was signed by the Minister of Health of Jamaica, Dr. Christopher Tufton, and H.E. Mrs. Inés Fors Fernández, Ambassador of Cuba in this Caribbean nation.
In his remarks at the presentation of the agreement, the Jamaican Health Minister thanked Cuba for its cooperation and recognized the valuable contribution of our professionals in this field.
Cuba and Jamaica have a history of more than 25 years of uninterrupted cooperation. In that period, Cuban health professionals have treated about 1,300,000 patients, which is equivalent to 46% of Jamaica's population. Only in the Kingston Ophthalmological Care Center, inaugurated in January, 2010, Cuban specialists have offered 130,600 consultations and performed around 17,000 surgeries.
Today, 291 Cuban health professionals work in different parts of the Jamaican geography. Most of them, 270 under the Compensated Technical Assistance, 18 in "Operation Miracle" and the remaining three as part of the Comprehensive Health Program.
