Cuba ratifies its commitment to the Mandela Rules for the treatment of prisoners

Vienna, July 20, 2020. The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the Office of the United Nations and International Organizations based in Vienna, Ambassador Loipa Sánchez Lorenzo, participated in a virtual meeting of the Group of Friends of the Rules of Mandela, organized by in conjunction with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day.

In her speech, the Cuban diplomat expressed that, in the treatment of persons deprived of liberty on the Island, certain principles are followed in strict compliance with the law. In this sense, he highlighted the teaching of values through educational, sports, and cultural programs and activities to facilitate the reintegration of prisoners into social life.

Likewise, the Ambassador reaffirmed Cuba's commitment to the Mandela Rules, guidelines formed by the UN General Assembly in tribute to the former South African president, with the aim of establishing standards for the treatment of persons deprived of liberty.
