Press Release
New York, 18 February 2021. Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, was elected Vice-Chair of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization, at an organizational meeting of the Bureau of the Committee.
In his words of thanks, the Cuban Ambassador congratulated the Permanent Representative of Grenada, Ambassador Keisha McGuire, on her re-election as Chair of the Committee, and his colleagues, Ambassador of Sierra Leone and Indonesia, who were also re-elected Vice-Chairs.
Pedroso Cuesta reiterated the historic commitment of Cuba to the eradication of colonialism, when more than sixty years after the adoption of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, the global decolonization process has not been completed and the goals set forth in the Declaration are yet to be met.
In his statement, he expressed that the Fourth International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism, recently declared by the General Assembly at its 75th session, constitutes an impetus to the common aspiration of all Member States to eradicate colonialism.
Pedroso added that along with the actions of the Committee, cooperation between Member States and the Secretariat is essential to deliver on the promise of leaving no one behind, including the 17 territories under colonial domination and Puerto Rico.
