Due to the seriousness of the incident and its humanitarian repercussions, the Embassy of Cuba in Antigua and Barbuda reproduces the following complaint made by the company Medicuba SA, which states:
“The company Medicuba SA denounces a new and dark chapter in the blockade imposed by the US government against Cuba, following the arbitrary detention in the port of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, of two containers of 500mg sodium valproate tablets, an essential medication for the treatment of epilepsy. The cargo is being held by the German shipping company Hapag -Lloyd, which refuses to release the shipment, citing strict compliance with the laws imposed by the criminal US blockade.”
“Depriving the Cuban population of this essential drug represents a direct threat to public health, since epilepsy requires continuous and uninterrupted treatment to avoid seizures and the deterioration of patients, making this withholding an act that directly violates the right to life and health of thousands of people, including children and the elderly.”
“ Medicuba SA demands that Hapag -Lloyd immediately release the containers and denounces this deliberate damage to the international community, reiterating that the blockade is the biggest barrier to access to medicines on the island,” end of quote.
The Embassy of Cuba in Antigua and Barbuda on behalf of the Cuban people , reiterates the call upon the governments, political forces, organizations of the social society and people of the world, to raise their voices in a sovereign manner and denounce the attempts by the US government to try to subjugate a small nation through genocidal policies of economic and social strangulation.
