Solidarity statement

Workers’ Party of Hungary 2006 - European Left is solidary with Cuba and continuously supports the island nation in its fight against the American blockade. Today, we reaffirm our solidarity and support for your government and people, who bear the weight of unilateral sanctions.

These sanctions significantly impact human rights in Cuba, particularly in the following areas:

• Healthcare: Lack of essential medicines and medical equipment.
• Education: Difficulties in acquiring educational materials and technologies, hindering student development.
• Labor: Complicated circumstances in industry, energy system and low wages due to economic blockade and restrictions.
• Vulnerable populations: The elderly, children, and people with disabilities are especially susceptible to the effects of sanctions.

The most detrimental sanctions include financial and trade restrictions, limiting economic functioning and hindering the satisfaction, particularly in healthcare and education. The most affected groups are the poor and vulnerable.

Unilateral sanctions severely impact the Cuban economy, critical infrastructure, and basic needs of the population. Humanitarian exemptions are limited, and international organizations' work is hindered due to over-compliance.

Despite difficult circumstances, the Cuban government has taken measures to mitigate sanction effects, introducing social programs and economic changes. These include efforts to ensure food and medicine supply and promote economic diversification.

Cuba, with a population only 1 million larger than Hungary's, saw six times fewer deaths during the pandemic due to these severe sanctions. It's unfortunate that an era is beginning where the US's latest far-right leadership openly threatens Venezuela and Colombia with military invasion, while supporting far-right forces in Argentina and Brazil. These pose significant challenges for Cuba.

We continue to support the Cuban people's rights and struggle against sanctions, urging international communities and countries to raise their voices in defense of the Cuban people.
