Mr. Vice-President,
Cuba reaffirms its support for the important mandate of the Special Rapporteur on cultural rights.
As the Rapporteur’s report rightly reflects, respecting, protecting, and guaranteeing cultural rights is fundamental for effective environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.
Cultural practices, traditional ecological knowledge, and local governance systems are essential for achieving positive outcomes in conservation.
For Cuba, cultural rights are a priority. Culture plays a vital role in the spiritual life and national identity of the Cuban people.
The effects of the United States’ unlawful economic blockade negatively impact all areas of cultural life in our country.
Despite these challenges, Cuba maintains a strong network of cultural institutions, a legal framework for the protection of heritage, and state support mechanisms for artistic creation, including subsidized prices that ensure broad access to cultural expressions.
In the current session of the Council, the Cuban delegation will present the draft resolution “Promotion of the enjoyment of the cultural rights of all and respect for cultural diversity.” We are grateful in advance for the valuable support for this initiative.
Thank you very much.
