The United Nations Conference on Disarmament held a plenary session today, during which the Ambassador of Cuba to Geneva, Rodolfo Benítez Verson, took the floor to denounce the unprecedented aggressive escalation undertaken by the Government of the United States, as a result of which the entire Cuban population is being ruthlessly punished.
The delegation of the United States at the session was headed by the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, Thomas G. DiNanno.
Referring to the threats to impose trade tariffs on imports from countries that supply oil to Cuba, Benítez described them as an assault on the sovereign prerogatives of States to export their goods and resources to the countries they deem appropriate, without foreign interference.
In response to the absurd assertion that Cuba constitutes an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the national security of the United States, the Cuban Ambassador emphasized that Cuba has never been a threat to the United States, its national interests, or the well-being of its citizens, nor has it supported any hostile activity against that country, and it will not allow Cuban territory to be used against any other nation.
“Unlike the United States, Cuba does not threaten or attack any country. We are a nation of peace, solidarity and cooperation, willing to help and contribute alongside other States,” he stated.
On behalf of the Cuban people and Government, Benítez expressed his gratitude for the expressions of international solidarity, noting that they demonstrate the isolation of the United States’ policy of asphyxiation and economic warfare against the Cuban people.
He concluded by affirming that “Cuba will continue to defend multilateralism, international law and peace, indispensable pillars for a more just and secure world.”
