The year 2024 represented a significant period for the Embassy of Cuba in the United Kingdom, marked by progress in various areas, highlighting the commitment to strengthen bilateral relations, strengthen ties with the Cuban resident community, promote solidarity towards our country, disseminate the Cuban cultural wealth and promote economic, commercial and tourism opportunities. Through a broad and dynamic agenda, the Embassy built bridges of cooperation that generated positive impacts in multiple spheres.
Throughout the year, important meetings were held with representatives of the British government, parliamentarians, political parties and trade unions, addressing issues of common interest. The situation in Cuba, aggravated by the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, and the island's continued inclusion on the State Department's list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, were also highlighted.
Solidarity with Cuba played a central role in the UK in 2024. Collaboration with the Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) was essential to raise awareness in British society of the challenges facing the island, especially the impact of the blockade and inclusion on the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism. Through events, conferences and joint activities, Cuba was highlighted as an example of resilience and development in key sectors such as health, education and sustainability.
Joint work with British trade unions, community organisations and political groups strengthened the solidarity support network, consolidating a vital movement to counter international challenges and promote a positive image of Cuba. The CSC's Cuba Vive Campaign raised over £129,000 to send medical supplies to the island.
In addition, opportunities in strategic sectors such as biotechnology, renewable energy and tourism were boosted, positioning Cuba as a reliable and attractive partner in these areas, opening new perspectives for future cooperation.
The Cuban community in the UK played an important role in the Embassy's efforts. During 2024, meetings were organised in London and other cities in the UK to promote national identity and strengthen the links of residents with their country of origin. Likewise, improvements were implemented in consular services, guaranteeing an agile and efficient attention that facilitated their integration into British society and fostered a sense of belonging and unity.
Cuban culture had a prominent presence in the UK, with events such as Screen Cuba, which was launched in 2024 and will continue to be organised to bring the best of Cuban cinema to British audiences. Collaborative activities with Cuban artists in residence are also an essential part of the initiatives that allow British audiences to experience the cultural essence of the island.
In the academic sphere, exchanges between universities and research centres strengthened cooperation in key areas. The signing of a memorandum of understanding between the universities of Havana and Glasgow was a milestone in this effort. The visit of a vice-minister from the Ministry of Higher Education contributed positively to these efforts.
The promotion of Cuba as a tourist destination was another of the outstanding achievements of 2024. Security, cultural and natural wealth, and the focus on sustainable tourism were highlighted, increasing the interest of the British public and contributing to the island's economic development.
The WTM London tourism fair was one of the platforms that allowed Cuba to become known as a tourist destination, especially through the Cuban delegation that participated in the Stan de Cuba at the renowned ExCel London convention centre.
Projections for 2025
In 2025, the Embassy will seek to deepen the achievements made, prioritising the expansion of bilateral relations and cultural and academic exchange through new festivals, exhibitions and joint projects. The promotion of tourism and trade relations will continue to be central, strengthening Cuba's presence in the UK.
Partnerships with the Cuba Solidarity Campaign and other organisations will be intensified, ensuring support in the face of international challenges. With a focus on cooperation, understanding and mutual respect, the Embassy reaffirms its commitment to strengthening ties between the two nations. The 2024 results and 2025 goals reflect a continued effort to build strong and beneficial relations for both countries.
