Cuban Chargé d'Affaires in Liberia participates in virtual tribute to Nelson Mandela.

Monrovia, July 17, 2020 - On the occasion of the 102nd anniversary of the birth of South African leader Nelson de Mandela, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Cuban Embassy in Liberia Mercedes Martínez Herrera participated in an online tribute to this universal symbol of peace, at a time when we must rescue the example of his figure in the fight against all types of discrimination.

Mandela has been and is a figure that is recognized worldwide by all. The South African politician went down in history, especially for spending twenty-seven years in prison for defending human rights and equality. His image and message, even after his death, still live on in the memory of millions of people.

Nelson Mandela was South Africa's first black president (1994-1999). He spent 27 years in the prisons of the segregationist regime and became the world's great icon of the struggle against the racist segregation of "apartheid". After his release in 1990, Mandela led a complex transition to democracy with the last Afrikaner president, Frederik De Klerk, in which he argued that reconciliation and peace should mark the new era despite more than three centuries of white racist domination.
