Monrovia, July 18, 2020 - To honor this icon of the struggle against apartheid and his selfless contribution to humanity, the Cuban Embassy in Liberia enjoyed a screening of the documentary "Mandela and Fidel".
Mandela became the first democratically elected president of South Africa in 1994. He led the country in starting a multiracial establishment. He ended his work as president in 1999, after completing his term and refusing to serve a second term.
In November 2009, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of the former South African President's contribution to the culture of peace and freedom, his sacrifice for the liberation of Africans and his service to human rights and democracy. This day also commemorates the fight against racism and apartheid
Nelson Mandela's calls for social cohesion and an end to racism are particularly relevant today.
