Half a century of unbreakable ties between Cuba and Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, July 18, 2025.- Cuba and Ethiopia today celebrate half a century of uninterrupted diplomatic relations, marked by a profound bond of brotherhood forged during some of the most significant moments in the contemporary history of both nations.

Officially established on July 18, 1975, the relationship between Havana and Addis Ababa has stood as a shining example of South-South cooperation, as well as a living expression of international solidarity, mutual commitment, and the shared defense of fundamental principles such as self-determination, sovereignty, and social justice.

Over the past five decades, the two countries have united in common struggles and strengthened ties in key sectors such as healthcare, education, science, and human capital development. Thousands of Ethiopian youth have been trained in Cuban institutions, and the presence of Cuban professionals in Ethiopia has contributed to building local capacities in support of national development.

Cuba does not forget Ethiopia’s steadfast support in multilateral forums, nor its consistent solidarity in condemning the economic blockade imposed by the United States. Ethiopia, in turn, recognizes the selfless and deeply humanitarian nature of Cuba’s cooperation, even during the most challenging times.

On this significant anniversary, both governments reaffirm their political will to continue deepening this historic relationship, one built on sovereign equality, mutual respect, and strategic cooperation.

This 50 anniversary is not only a moment to honor the past, but also an opportunity to look toward the future with renewed commitment: to strengthen bilateral ties and explore new areas of collaboration that respond to today’s global challenges and promote the well-being of both peoples.

The history that unites Cuba and Ethiopia stands as a testament to the fact that true friendship between nations is forged through solidarity and sustained through action.
