STATEMENT BY THE GUYANA PEACE COUNCIL CONCERNING LOSS OF LIVES AND DAMAGE AS A RESULT OF THE GREAT FIRE AT A SUPERTANKER TERMINAL IN CUBA

Guyana, August 8, 2022. The Guyana Peace Council (GPC) takes this opportunity to convey to the government and people of Cuba its deepest sympathy over the loss of life, physical injuries to persons, and damage to property caused by a massive fire due to a lightning strike that hit hydrocarbon tanks located at the supertanker terminal at the industrial zone in the Cuban Province of Matanzas.

GCSM express solidarity in relation to fire in Matanzas

Georgetown, August 8, 2022. The Guyana-Cuba Solidarity Movement (GCSM) stands in support with Cuba in the aftermath of an explosion of two fuel tanks in the industrial zone of the province of Matanzas, east of the capital, on Friday last.

The tragedy that left more than 120 injured, one dead so far, while 17 people are missing. The fire broke out around 7:00 p.m. local time last Friday when lightning struck one of the facility’s crude tanks.

AUGUST 8, 2022.The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) stands with the government and people of Cuba in the aftermath of the disastrous fire at the Port of Matanzas.  We extend our condolences on the loss of life and wish a speedy recovery to the scores of people who were injured in this tragic accident brought on by an act of nature.

Guyana-Cuba Solidarity Movement (GCSM), calls for end of US blockade

Guyana, July 28, 2022. Cuba marked the anniversary of Fidel Castro’s first armed uprising 69 years ago on Monday with renewed calls for an end to the US embargo since the blockade has deeply affected the nation’s fortunes.

According to President of the Guyana-Cuba Solidarity Movement (GCSM), Halim Khan for some, such posturing recalls the Cold War and the Cuban missile crisis between the United States and the former Soviet Union, which brought the world to the brink of nuclear warfare and was a major motivation for the blockade against Cuba.
