The President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Dr. Irfaan Ali, in Debate 77 of the UN General Assembly stated: "In our own region, we once more time join the overwhelming majority of members of the international community in reiterating the rejection of Guyana to the sanctions imposed on the Republic of Cuba".
Guyana, Georgetown, August 12, 2022. The President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Dr. Irfaan Ali sent a letter of condolences and solidarity to the government and the people of Cuba for the disastrous fire that took place in the oil storage facility in Matanzas City, Cuba.
Washington, Aug 10 (Prensa Latina) Artists, intellectuals, politicians, scientists, activists and religious leaders today sent a letter to the President of the United States, Joe Biden, to demand the end of the blockade against Cuba in the midst of the devastating fire in fuel depots.
“Sanctions feed the fire,” say the signatories of the letter, among whom are US intellectual Noam Chomsky, British politician Jeremy Corbyn, musician Roger Waters, philosopher Judith Butler, and the Afro-American Cornel West, known for his fight in favor of human rights.

The Guyana Peace Council (GPC) takes this opportunity to convey to the government and people of Cuba its deepest sympathy over the loss of life, physical injuries to persons, and damage to property caused by a massive fire due to a lightning strike that hit hydrocarbon tanks located at the supertanker terminal at the industrial zone in the Cuban Province of Matanzas.
Georgetown, August 8, 2022. The Guyana-Cuba Solidarity Movement (GCSM) stands in support with Cuba in the aftermath of an explosion of two fuel tanks in the industrial zone of the province of Matanzas, east of the capital, on Friday last.
The tragedy that left more than 120 injured, one dead so far, while 17 people are missing. The fire broke out around 7:00 p.m. local time last Friday when lightning struck one of the facility’s crude tanks.
