Addis Ababa, March 14, 2026.- The Chairman of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, received the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the continental organization, Lucas Domingo Hernández Polledo, in a meeting held at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa.
During the cordial exchange, both parties reviewed the current state of relations between Cuba and Africa, as well as the historical ties of cooperation, solidarity and brotherhood that unite the Island with the African continent.
The Cuban Ambassador conveyed his gratitude to the African Union for the resolution against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba, adopted during the 39th African Union Summit. This resolution reaffirms the continent's long-standing support for the international demand for the lifting of this policy. He also shared his assessment of the continental summit's outcomes and the strategic priorities discussed by African leaders.
During the meeting, they exchanged views on the current complex international situation and its repercussions for countries of the Global South. The Cuban diplomat further explained the situation Cuba faces due to the intensification of the blockade and the impact of recent measures affecting fuel supplies to the island. This has exacerbated the difficulties of the national energy system and has had repercussions on the daily lives of the Cuban people.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, for his part, reiterated Africa's unwavering solidarity with Cuba, highlighting the deep historical ties that bind the African continent to the Caribbean nation.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continue strengthening ties between Cuba and the African Union, based on mutual respect, South-South cooperation and the defense of multilateralism.
