G77: Statement of the Group of 77 and China at the thematic deep dive on “Accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”

At the mid-point of the 2030 Agenda, only 12 per cent of the SDGs targets are on track, the number of people living in extreme poverty today is higher than it was four years ago, hunger has also increased and is back at 2005 levels, inequalities are growing as also are the levels of indebtedness of developing countries.

Cuba positively acknowledges UNICEF’s efforts to support maternal and neonatal health, child nutrition, child vaccination and education, just to mention a few; and highlights that, thanks to UNICEF's work, 37.9 million children and adolescents will have access to education by 2022.

The UN Special Committee on Decolonization declared Western Sahara a Non-Self-Governing Territory 59 years ago. Numerous resolutions have ratified the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people. It is imperative that the international community commits itself to the implementation of UN resolutions and decisions on Western Sahara.

G77: Remarks, on behalf of G-77 + China, by Yuri Gala Lopez, Chargé d´Affaires a.i of the Cuban Permanent Mission to United Nations, at the side event on Equity and the Law of the Sea, 33rd Meeting of States Parties to UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The recent agreement on the BBNJ Treaty, 19 years after discussions began, has ushered in a new governance era for the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans. Among other significant achievements, the Group of 77 and China have succeeded in including in the Treaty a truly balanced model for the sharing of the benefits arising from the use of marine genetic resources and digital sequence information, which is an important part of biological scientific research today.

Equity is a fundamental basis for understanding the context and identifying future actions for enhancing ambition, addressing implementation barriers and opportunities, and strengthening international cooperation under the Convention and the Paris Agreement. Considering equity and the best available science together will strengthen the science-policy interface.
