The UN Special Committee on Decolonization declared Western Sahara a Non-Self-Governing Territory 59 years ago. Numerous resolutions have ratified the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people. It is imperative that the international community commits itself to the implementation of UN resolutions and decisions on Western Sahara.
The recent agreement on the BBNJ Treaty, 19 years after discussions began, has ushered in a new governance era for the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans. Among other significant achievements, the Group of 77 and China have succeeded in including in the Treaty a truly balanced model for the sharing of the benefits arising from the use of marine genetic resources and digital sequence information, which is an important part of biological scientific research today.

Equity is a fundamental basis for understanding the context and identifying future actions for enhancing ambition, addressing implementation barriers and opportunities, and strengthening international cooperation under the Convention and the Paris Agreement. Considering equity and the best available science together will strengthen the science-policy interface.
I have the honor to introduce on behalf of the Group of 77 and China the draft resolution contained in document (A/77/L.72), titled International Day of Combating sand and dust storms, where it’s stressing the need for cooperation at the global and regional levels with a view to managing and mitigating the effects of sand and dust storms.

As we look forward to the conclusion of the first GST this year, with the key focus being on the conclusion of the Technical Dialogue and the conduct of the consideration of outputs component, the Group of 77 and China would like to highlight the following:
Developing countries continue to face unprecedented challenges that hinders their ability to recover from the negative socio-economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and the multiple crises. The UNJ Development System has a crucial role to play in supporting countries national efforts to achieve the SDGs and meeting development challenges. The Group appreciates the efforts by the UNDP in assisting the developing countries in this regard.
In the G77 and China Ministerial Declaration adopted in September 2022 in New York, the G77 and China’s Ministers “reaffirmed that the Paris Agreement is the collective achievement of all Parties, and seeks to enhance the implementation of the Convention, in accordance with its objectives, principles and provisions”.
